Looking at Eyelid Hygiene

Looking at Eyelid Hygiene

Inflamed eyelids, also called blepharitis, is something that a lot of people experience at some point during their lives. It's a common eyelid inflammation, usually associated with an existing bacterial eye infection, specific types of skin conditions, such as acne, and dry eye symptoms.

Usually, symptoms include redness, itching, burning, the sensation of a foreign body in the eye, tearing and crusting around the eye. The condition can often be problematic to overcome, as it's usually chronic.

But it's reassuring to know that there are a number of things you can do to take control of blepharitis and maintain healthy eye hygiene. Firstly, apply a warm washcloth to the outside of your eye to help loosen the crust on your eyelids and eyelashes before you clean them. The heat from the washcloth will also dislodge any clogged residue in your eyelids' oil secreting glands. At the start of your treatment, you will probably need to do this several times throughout the day for about five minutes each time. When things clear up a bit, you may only need to use the compress for a few minutes, once a day.

Thorough eyelid washing is a necessary part of blepharitis treatment, so it's best to find a commercial eyelid scrub or whatever product your optometrist recommends. You want to gently massage the outside of your eyelids and all residue should be rinsed off after the cleansing process.

Although uncomfortable, blepharitis isn't actually contagious at all and typically, does not lead to any permanent damage to your vision, so have a talk with your optometrist about eyelid hygiene, to maintain eyelid hygiene.
