What to Know About Cataracts

It's June, which means it's Cataract Awareness Month. Did you know that cataracts are the most commonly occurring culprit of vision loss among adults aged 55 and older? More so, more than fifty percent of those who are 65 and older have at least some cataract development. As reported by the National Eye Institute, by the time they hit 80, more than 50 percent of all Americans will have either had cataract surgery, or will have a cataract.

So what exactly is a cataract? A cataract is like a veil in front of the lens in the eye; one which limits or distorts the way light enters into the eye. When it comes to most people, cataracts are a natural result of older age. Other potential causes for developing a cataract include hypertension, family history, steroid use, smoking and eye injuries.

In the early stages of cataract development, brighter lighting and glasses could be prescribed to minimize the vision problems you might be having. Eventually, though, a surgical procedure might be required to fix your sight. More than 90% of people who have undergone cataract surgery reacquire perfect or near perfect vision.

If you are in your sixties and experiencing low vision, the time has come to discuss cataracts with your eye care professional. There are treatments available for cataracts, and we know you want to be able to see well throughout your golden years.
